HBL PSL9 2024
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) launched a T-20 cricket league for men in 2016, under Najam Sethi, called the Pakistan Super League (PSL). It is held annually in February and March, with Habib Bank Limited (HBL) being the main sponsor since its inception. The first season was won by Islamabad United, led by Misbah-ul-Haq. The upcoming season, PSL9 2024, will also be sponsored by HBL as the previous seasons were also sponsored by HBL.
The HBL PSL is a prominent cricket league that attracts players from Pakistan and all over the world. It consists of six teams, each owned and operated by separate investors. Initially, the league included five city-based franchise teams, which expanded to six teams from its 3rd edition in 2018 until now. The league provides an opportunity for players to showcase their talent and skills on a global platform.
A total of eight editions of the HBL PSL have been successfully organized. The preparations for HBL PSL9 2024 are beginning, promising yet another exciting and thrilling season. Among the six teams, Islamabad United (IU) and Lahore Qalandars (LQ) are the only teams who have won the HBL PSL title twice, making them the most consistent performers and successful teams. Lahore Qalandars are the current champions of the HBL PSL, and they are also the only team to have successfully defended their title by winning the HBL PSL 8 in 2023.
History of HBL PSL
The T20 format of cricket, also known as Twenty-Twenty, has added a new spark to this sport since its introduction at the international level in 2005. This format has gained more love and attention than the other formats. Following the trend set by other sports such as football, the concept of introducing a league in cricket was born.
In 2003, the first-ever professional T20 cricket league was held in England. However, it was not a franchise-based league. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) introduced the first franchise-based cricket league in 2008 with the consent of the International Cricket Council (ICC). This league gained worldwide recognition and fame.
Inauguration of the HBL PSL9 2024
In 2015, after numerous discussions and meetings, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officially announced the launch of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The league was aimed at improving the status of cricket in Pakistan. However, due to security concerns, the league started in February 2016 in the United Arab Emirates as international cricket was prohibited in Pakistan at that time.
The Pakistan Super League (PSL) started with five teams in the first two seasons, named after the provincial capitals and federal capital of Pakistan. The five teams were:
- Islamabad United (Led by Misbah-ul-Haq)
- Quetta Gladiators (Led by Sarfraz Ahmed)
- Lahore Qalandars (Led by Azhar Ali for the first 5 matches then by DJ Bravo)
- Peshawar Zalmi ( Led by Darren Sammy)
- Karachi Kings ( Led by Shoaib Malik)
Later, in 2018, the PSL management added a sixth team in the third season of the league. To select local and international players, the organizers of PSL opted for the drafting system, which is commonly used in many professional sports in America, rather than the auction system.
On September 20, 2015, 3Di unveiled the official logo of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) during a ceremony in Lahore, which was attended by current and retired cricketers, as well as celebrities.
